The Academy at Glengary

A place of opportunity, hope and new beginnings.

The Academy, located in Sarasota county, is a working community, where opportunities for skill development, friendship, and employment are the means by which Academy members pursue their dreams and goals.

Academy members are valued for their skills and talents, while embarking on a journey to wellness and mental health recovery. Training opportunities are offered in culinary arts, hospitality, phone reception, business, maintenance/janitorial, customer service, accounting/banking, videography and graphic design. In addition, the Academy offers opportunities for socialization, fun and relaxation on evening, weekend and holiday events.

The Academy works in partnership with community-based providers to support the other needs of our members. It is relevant to note that the Academy does not offer therapy or clinical treatment, nor is it our intention to replace these mental health services.

The Academy holds a three-year accreditation with Clubhouse International and is part of a worldwide network of over 290 clubhouse programs in 32 countries.

Our History

In 2015, a working group of over 20 community leaders representing a cross section of the Sarasota community came together for the creation of the Academy. Following two years of planning, community outreach, fundraising and construction, we joined forces with Central Florida Behavioral Health Network in the formation of a public-private partnership.

The Academy opened on June 16, 2017, and is incorporated as the Academy at Glengary, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit corporation.

Our Mission

Create a working community where adults can improve mental health through friendship, healthy lifestyles, skill development and careers.

Thanks to a unique collaboration between public and private sectors, the Academy engages community leaders, family members, businesses, human service providers and others in the transformational process of helping our members lead productive and meaningful lives.

Our Values

At the Academy, members and staff take pride in the daily practice of our values.

The Academy is based on partnership, with members and staff working side by side. From producing healthy meals to designing marketing brochures, our community shares work in a range of mutual endeavors. Members have the opportunity to contribute their talents and skills, and are stakeholders in the success of our mission.

Respect and Dignity

The inherent worth of every individual is forefront in our minds. From the care that we put into maintaining our facility, to the way in which we communicate with one another, we foster respect without judgment. This creates a safe environment for every individual to aspire, even amidst challenges; to foster resilience and, in doing so, to exceed expectations.

Members and staff are deeply committed in their service to each other. We extend this value of service to our guests, family members and the greater Sarasota community. To be a catalyst for transformation is to fulfill a purpose greater than ourselves.

Our rehabilitation process is wellness-based, and focuses on strengths and talents rather than symptoms or disability. In addition, physical and mental health go hand in hand and, as such, wellness is a focus in everything we do. This includes growing some of our own vegetables, serving nutritious meals, and offering meditation, yoga, smoking cessation and exercise sessions.
