The two-day event attracted a large local and regional audience. It included a live concert, Tug-O-Jeep, an obstacle course, raffles, food trucks, vendors and much more. Jeep owners are well-known for their generosity, and the Suncoast Jeep Festival was another example of this caring attitude. Proceeds from the event were distributed between four charities: Bridge a Life, Off Road United, Mission 22 and the Academy at Glengary.

The Academy will use this donation to expand membership and reach more individuals who are seeking the opportunity for mental health recovery. Vocational training, community reintegration, friendship, supported education and career development are all part of the journey for Academy members.

Organizers of the Suncoast Jeep Festival are already preparing for the Third Annual Festival, to be held in September 2020. We are deeply grateful to our area Jeep owners and enthusiasts for their generosity and kindness. Pictured above are Billy Elkins, Kallin Horne and Beth Taylor-Ritchie (left to right), identifiable by their dark blue Jeep Festival polo shirts.

Fall 2019 Ambassador Luncheon https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/fall-2019-ambassador-luncheon/ Tue, 26 Nov 2019 16:27:49 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/posts/happenings/fall-2019-ambassador-luncheon/ Last Thursday, after the last guest had left the Academy, staff and members came together to celebrate and reflect on our Fall Ambassador Luncheon. Before the task of assessing the effectiveness of our fundraising efforts would even begin, we had already achieved several key goals. This raises the question: how do we measure success?

Success began taking shape in the months leading up to the luncheon. Members took full initiative in the planning. Our young adults proposed and executed the idea of a Young Adult themed program. Success was demonstrated by their courage to share personal stories in a roomful of people.

Guest speaker Kelly Romanoff, Impact and Innovation Officer from the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, (funders of our Young Adult Initiative) discussed the commitment of the Barancik Foundation to children and youth, and shared a deeply personal story that illustrated just how much she truly understands our mission.

Our employment partner from Sunset Cadillac, General Manager Steve Montanaro, spoke of his first visit to the Academy saying “I was in awe. I went from being interested in partnership to being compelled toward partnership.” Steve shared a success story, emphatically illustrating the mutual benefits of providing employment opportunities to our members.

Success was apparent in the hours before guests arrived. Thirty-one members were responsible for the organized fluidity of our culinary team as they put the finishing touches on the buffet lunch and table settings, and in the readiness of our member tour guides, and in all the details that go unseen. Were we perfect? Certainly not. But sometimes success is best measured in how we demonstrate grace in our imperfections.

For us, success was measured in an event wholly conceived and executed by our membership, where guests bore witness to the joy we put into everything we do, and the camaraderie that comes from tireless hours of collaborating toward a passionate pursuit.

With gratitude to the Steinwach Family Foundation, along with an anonymous “friend of the Academy” donor with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, we reached our financial goal. But more than this, we raised expectations, we raised the confidence of our members, and we raised awareness about challenges and potential of young adults pursuing improved mental health. In the words of our Young Adults, “we just need a chance
to prosper.”

“Live from the Academy” Summer Telethon https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/live-from-the-academy-summer-telethon/ Wed, 26 Jun 2019 15:23:14 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/posts/happenings/live-from-the-academy-summer-telethon/ These are exciting times at the Academy! In mid-August, we will be unveiling an entertaining, high-tech approach to a classic fundraising experience. Do you remember the Jerry Lewis Telethons of yesteryear? Members and staff of the Academy will be putting our skills to use to offer our First Annual Summer Telethon, aptly titled “Live from the Academy.”

We are fortunate to count on the talents and charisma of Academy Ambassador, Stewie Bitterman, who will help host the Telethon. It will be available by public access over the Internet, and the only requirement is to have a computer and speakers. We will also be unveiling our newly equipped multimedia studio, a venue that will be used for future livestreams and podcasts.

Please join the fun on Wednesday, August 14, at 7 p.m. for “Live from the Academy.” It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the power of recovery. To top things off, the Steinwachs Family Foundation has offered a 1:1 match on donations made during the event (more details to follow).  In the meantime, help us spread the word. Please visit www.AcademySRQ.org/live

Ambassador Luncheon Fundraiser https://www.academysrq.org/en/posts/events/ambassador-luncheon-fundraiser/ Mon, 12 Nov 2018 14:00:00 +0000 http://127.0.0.1/github/bayfrontmedia/academysrq.org/web/?p=844 You may have noticed that the Arts and Communication team did not publish a newsletter last week. Last minute tasks kept everyone busy so we decided to skip a week.

All the teams were busy preparing for the Ambassador Luncheon Fundraiser held last Thursday, November 8. Planning for the event began months ago. So many details go into putting on an event like a fundraiser. From the invitation design to the centerpieces on the tables to the seating chart to the live streaming to the fabulous food served to the incredible member stories, it took everyone’s participation to make it a success. And boy was it a success! Our dining room was filled to capacity with generous family, friends and community leaders who share in our mission and want to help us succeed. Each member had a role, some had many roles, and everyone rose to the occasion and performed beautifully.

After the event, everyone was exhausted, but still had smiles knowing that, once again, we came together and achieved success!
