Information for Applicants

Steps to take to apply for membership at the Academy

We are happy that you have found us! We know that, for most people, even considering something new can cause some anxiety and nervousness. We understand this, and we will support you every step of the way, at your own pace. We’ve made our enrollment process as easy and stress-free as possible, with minimal paperwork requirements.

Eligibility: If you are 18 years of age or older and live with a mental health diagnosis, you are invited to apply for membership. Please note that traumatic brain injury, developmental disabilities or autism spectrum are not considered eligible diagnoses. There are other specialized services for these conditions in our region.

Rick's Story of Finding Hope and Recovery

Rick Pardo shares his personal story of recovery: from a prior career as a professional truck driver to finding hope and opportunity at the Academy. (9 minutes)

Step 1: Schedule a tour

The first step is simply to come in for a tour. Tours typically last 15-20 minutes, though we are in no rush! If you have a lot of questions, your tour may be longer. An Academy member will show you around, and you’ll see what a typical day at the Academy looks like. Upon seeing what we do, most visitors say that our program is quite different than what they expected, so we invite you to see it for yourself. You will meet our friendly members and staff and see us working side by side in the mutual operation of the Academy.

Be assured, you’re just gathering information at this point. We don’t expect you to make decisions on the day of your tour, and we will never pressure you to enroll.

Step 2: Enroll

Following the tour, we will review the enrollment paperwork. This includes a New Member Information form that you will complete (we can assist you), and a Referral Form from your mental health provider.

Step 3: Welcome!

Following enrollment at the Academy:

  • You are in the driver’s seat! You set your own schedule and decide how often you would like to attend. You will come and go as you choose and participate in whatever work interests you, regardless of your experience or skill set. Some members participate every day, others less frequently. Our employed members often come before or after work or on their days off. If you need some guidance structuring your days, we’re here to support you.
  • The Academy is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm. We are also open for social events on select evenings and weekends as well as all major holidays.
