Embark on a career

The Academy offers multiple ways to help members obtain paid employment

Work plays a central role in our lives. It’s where we develop a sense of identity and purpose within the larger community. Yet, adults living with mental health challenges often struggle to find and sustain fulfilling work. By building on their talents and capabilities, members have a chance to blossom and reach their career potential.

At the Academy, we know that it is possible for everyone to connect with meaningful work and a sense of purpose.

The supportive staff at the Academy helps me maintain my job by encouraging me when it gets tough, and maintaining a relationship with my employer.

- Aaron Collmer, Academy Member

For those with little or no work history, or a significant gap in employment, the Academy offers a step-by-step approach to career development. The first step involves participation in the Academy's work-ordered day. While regaining skills and confidence, Academy members have the opportunity to develop an individualized career plan. Reentry into the workforce begins with Transitional Employment, which offers members part-time paid work, with a high level of ongoing support from Academy staff. From there, members may move on to Supported or Independent Employment, where assistance is provided with job searching, interview preparation, and sometimes even on-the-job training. Academy job coaches work closely with working members and, at the member’s discretion, communicate regularly with their employers to help foster job success.

Transitional Employment

As part of our Transitional Employment (TE) program, we partner with high profile local businesses to fill entry-level positions. We provide:

  • Quality, reliable personnel (our amazing members!)
  • A commitment to job coverage 100% of the time
  • Ongoing job coaching

TE positions are part-time and typically last between 6 and 9 months. Members work at the employer’s place of business and are paid the commensurate wage directly by the employer. TE positions are entry-level jobs that provide a first step back into the workforce.

Supported Employment

Academy members can pursue Supported Employment job placements in the field of their choice. These permanent positions can be either part-time or full-time, and are often with one of the Academy’s employment partners. Academy job coaches are available to assist with resume building, interview preparation and on-the-job-training.
